- Michael purchased the Casa Del Sol restaurant in Christchurch
and renamed it Michaels, winning several restaurant awards
over the next few years
- Established The Silver Palate, later renamed White Tie Catering
- Established The Canterbury Gourmet Society in 1984, a diverse
group of wine and food devotees who meet three times a year
- Founded Harewood & Faber in 1989, a hireage company specialising
in top quality event accessories
- Founded The Small Kitchen School in 1986, a demonstration cooking
school with seating for 90
- Food Editor of North & South magazine

- Founded Hillside in 1999, a private cooking school and food retreat
- Founded Maximilian Heritage in 1999, a food consultancy service
incorporating The Food Team
